Recently my business partners and I launched our new business, Starboard IT. After all the talk and planning it was an exciting time for everyone concerned as we aspired for true greatness.

Who was going to take on the role of sales? After all, we were 3 technologists with a shared passion for technology in business, yet had no experience in the area of sales. Sharon shown me how to better relate to my clients. The eDISC analysis helped me to understand whom I am and how I come across to the others. I learnt to deliver my key messages more effectively and to focus on securing the “next step”. Asking for the next step, may it be a follow up meeting, permission to present a quote or signing off on an order, sounds so natural and trivial but yet used to be so daunting. I was always too polite to ask but was waiting for my clients “to offer” the next step. I am still polite but much more confident and assertive but not aggressive.

I have been running my IT Security consulting business, Security Express (www.securityexpress.com.au), for more than ten years. I position my business as a “Trusted Advisor” which means I have to be close and trusted by my clients to be effective. I always thought I was good at “selling my ideas” until I attended a half day sales workshop ran by Sharon through Sydney Sales Meetup at end of 2017. It was a fun and intriguing experience which also challenged some areas in my self-image. IT security is not exactly a topic for dinner parties and I was operating in a relatively protected environment. All my clients came through referral which means I didn’t need to justify my value proposition. I am preaching to the converted but it doesn’t mean they are happy listeners! Sharon’s Sales Kit and Sale Fit methodologies are powerful lenses to reveal weakness in my engagement process.
